The theme of the swing has often inspired Indian painters. Here, the artist has depicted women and children who benefit from their palanquins stopped to rest and have a rope hanging from the branch of a tree to be able to swing it. Thus he could compose this charming genre scene. Bernier, in his Voyage of Cashmere, recounted how the ladies of the Seraglio were being transported: in some Brancart or "tchaudoule", painted and gilded; others paleky (palanquin) covered with silk threads, others in large litter carried by camels and elephants.
