In twilight, not devoid of mystery, full moon rises above the river where two boatmen maneuver silently with perches, one a boat loaded with timber, the other a raft. The wind blows gently and bows willows, reeds and rushes. Some thatched roofs appear scattered on the horizon. Hiroshige  expresses here his great talent as a colourist to translate all the effects and nuances of the cloudy dusk by subtle shades of blue, gray and pink orange. He manages to simultaneously renders the rays of light from the moon and the sun, while playing on the contrast between the dark green fields and the deep blue river. This beautiful work of art belongs to the series of Kisokaido, made in collaboration with Eisen (1790-1848). The Kisokaido road, going from Edo to Kyoto, through the inland mountains and along the valley of the Kiso River, was much less represented than the Tokaido road, alongside the sea.
